One Room Challenge Week 2: Planning

Welcome to Week 2 of the One Room Challenge! Now that the design concept is finalized, it is time for the most crucial step: the furniture layout. Before we start ANY shopping, it is important to have a floorplan completed. Why is this so important? If you start shopping for furniture without a plan, you will end up with furniture that doesn’t fit and many returns. Plus, if you order something custom, that is most likely non-refundable. To save myself the headache and exhaustion, I start with the floor plan before any shopping begins.

If you have been following me on Instagram Stories, than you will have caught the behind the scenes of me measuring my space and plotting the furniture out.

Here is what I have came up with:

I wasn’t kidding when I said the room was small! The bed just fits in between the windows, almost perfectly. The headboard will overhang a fraction of an inch and the dresser is closer to the edge of bed than desired, but I’ll live!

In the elevation, you can see how the room will look from a 2-D perspective as if you were looking at the window wall. In the floorplan, you won’t really notice that I have included hanging pendant light fixtures over the nightstands to save me space on my bedside table.

Not having a lamp shade also makes the room feel more open because it won’t be blocking most of the window. The hanging mini pendant fixtures take up less visual space than a lamp, giving the room that open feeling that I am looking to achieve. The fixtures also draw your eyes upward to the ceiling, giving the illusion that the room is bigger than it actually is! Don’t we all love that?!

Here are some renderings so you can understand the big picture:

Now that the floorplan is set, I can finally shop for furniture! Stay tuned for next week to see what I have picked out and ordered.

In the meantime, it’s DEMO time!! We already started opening up the closet walls so we can fit the dresser inside of that area. We ripped up the flooring, removed the drop ceiling, and removed the purple paneling (good riddens!).

During the demo phase…..we discovered some surprises. When we ripped up the flooring to discover carpeting, then ripped up carpeting to discover sparkly laminate. After being on our hands and knees sweating (and swearing) for days, we couldn’t have been more excited to reveal the final layer. And then we started taking down the purple panel, which also had fun surprises behind it too! After tearing down layer after layer, I feel like a Designer Archeologist.

Here is a video clip of the demo process and the not-so-glamorous part:

The bedroom is coming along!

What are your thoughts on the design so far? I would love to hear from you, leave a comment below!

Follow along next week where I will be sharing my shopping process and the items that I have selected for the space.
