Why Purchase an Eco-Friendly Mattress

I have been designing a lot of bedrooms lately, including my own. While on the hunt for the perfect mattress, I received requests from my clients and family members who were also in the market for a mattress. I would never recommend a product that I didn’t feel safe or that I personally didn’t love — so I had to do some research.

After much research, I decided to purchase an eco-friendly mattress from Live and Sleep. Click below to watch my video review of the mattress and I will also outline the benefits and more details in this post.

Why you should switch to an eco-friendly mattress?

Before purchasing an eco-friendly mattress, I was sleeping on a regular spring-core mattress with a box spring. I was always tossing and turning. I was never able to find a comfortable position or get a full-night of sleep. In order to get a better night sleep, I purchased an off-brand memory foam topper, not giving it much thought. When my new topper came in, yes it was comfortable but WOW did it reek! The fumes were causing me to cough and have headaches — so I quickly returned that topper and started researching alternatives.

Out of the things in my home, my mattress was the LAST item that I would think I had to worry about being safe for my health. It is this lack of awareness that made me want to shed light around this topic. Not only did I want to educate myself about the potential dangers of not going eco-friendly, but I wanted to be able to recommend safe products to my clients with confidence.

There is a lot of talk around “going green” or “natural” — however, these terms are often misused because there is no government certification for eco-friendly mattresses. Due to the lack of standardization, consumers are mislead into purchasing a mattress that seem to be safe but actually aren’t. A product that may claim to be “natural” could contain natural fibers such as wool or cotton that are loaded with pesticides or other chemicals.

Which is why it is important to research before you purchase and look for third-party certifications. One of the largest voluntary third-party certifications for textiles is the OEKO-Tex Standard 100 for textiles free of harmful substances.

did you know?

Non-Eco Mattresses may contain:

  • Toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde, benzene, and naphthalene that you are inhaling in your sleep (gross)

  • Synthetic fibers that don’t biodegradable (which means the materials do not decompose fill our landfills forever)

  • Isocyanates which can cause irritation to the eyes, throat, nose, and skin. Exposure can lead to chest tightness and asthma

  • Chemical flame retardants which have been linked to a litany of health issues such as developmental brain disorders, cancer, and even obesity

  • May not be made in a controlled environment which means the quality, performance, and longevity isn’t guaranteed

my overall experience with the mattress:

I had purchased the Live and Sleep Luxury mattress in the Queen size. After sleeping on my mattress for over 60 days, I can honestly say that sleeping on my Live and Sleep mattress has been the best sleep I ever had. On my old mattress, I was constantly tossing and turning — now, I am comfortable in one position and fall asleep instantly. I now am able to sleep on my back with comfort, which I used to be a stomach sleeper. I am getting a full-night of rest and I wake up feeling refreshed without any aches or pains.

I will admit that I was skeptical about purchasing a mattress online without testing it first, but the 100-night sleep trial guarantee and the endless amount of positive reviews and ratings secured my decision.

The mattress arrived in 2-days which came rolled tight in a box. I was able to open and assemble the mattress on my own without much difficulty, although an extra hand to place on top of my bed may have been easier. The mattress reached it’s full capacity fairly quickly.

For more stability and to extend the longevity of my mattress, I did add a bunkie board (not shown in video). Instead of placing the mattress onto the slats of your platform bed, I recommend adding support under it so the bottom doesn’t wear and tear.

If you are in the market for a mattress, I highly recommend checking out Live and Sleep. If my review isn’t enough to convince you, check out their website for more testimonials.

Until next time, sweet dreams!
